Becoming a Health Walk Leader - March 2021

So I have some exciting news to share - I have just finished my accredited online training for becoming a Health Walk Leader, in partnership with OneLife Suffolk and the Ramblers Group.

OneLife Suffolk offer over 200 free, volunteer-led Health Walks across all of Suffolk. I applied for the walk leader’s course and have now completed my training. When Covid restrictions ease I will be able to do my practice walk, shadow walk and then receive my certificate to enable me to lead some of my own walks.

Walking is one of the easiest ways to stay active. It is not only good for your physical health, but it can also reduce stress and feelings of isolation. These walks are organised and fun and best of all, FREE!

The walks are inclusive of all abilities. All walks will have a person at the back of the walk to ensure that no one is left behind and where possible, also have buddies to support people if required.

Various gradings of walks are available from Grade 1 for up to 30 minutes on flat surfaces through to longer walks of up to 90 minutes at Grade 5 which can include uneven ground with stiles and a faster pace.

I can't wait to be able to contribute to something positive whilst doing something that I love. It will be great if I am able to come up with some new walks around my local area too, for the benefit of the local community. Two of my friends have also completed their training so we are hoping to lead some walks together.

I can't wait to meet new people and hopefully explore different places. To be able to help encourage people to get outside and be active is an added bonus.

Although Health Walks are currently suspended, you can still get outside, get some fresh air and go for a walk! The Health Walks Facebook group is a place for you to share your favourite walks in Suffolk, as well as how far you have walked and any photos you took on route. It is also a great way of staying motivated to get active and you can discover new places to walk based on other people’s suggestions!
