Make a new year resolution to spend time outdoors in 2022

The start of a brand new year is like a fresh slate. If you want to make a lifestyle change to focus on in 2022, why not make it a regular part of your life to stay healthy and get outside whenever you can. Especially as a family, there are lots of ways to have fun outdoors.


Spending time in nature can help relieve stress and anxiety, improve your mood, and boost feelings of happiness and wellbeing. Read about how spending time in green space or bringing nature into your everyday life can benefit both your mental and physical wellbeing.



Activities to enhance your lifestyle


Here are some hobbies you could try which you can do outdoors, regardless of the weather.


  • Running

  • Walking

  • Cycling

  • Swimming

  • Paddleboarding/kayaking

  • Rollerskating/skateboarding (if you are careful!)

  • Sledging (if it's snowing)


Family fun outside


Going for a walk in the park, or to a forest or to visit somewhere like an historic house or castle is a great way to spend some time outside. Let the children run around, look up history, walk the dogs and explore the outdoors. Here are some ideas for fun activities in parks.


Alternatively, why not take out the bikes for a family cycle or some skateboards or scooters. Anything which is fun and gets people in the open air. Give a new hobby a try, such as geocaching.







Working from home


With the events of the last couple of years, more people are now working from home. This can lead to increased time looking at computers, less screen breaks which would have naturally occurred in the office, more intensity of online meetings and a blurring of lines between work and personal time. This makes it so important to make sure you step away from the computer and get outside when you can. There are many ways you can incorporate getting outside into your life.


If you are unable to get outside for some reason, there are ways you can de-stress indoors:

  • Take regular movement breaks to counteract the computer fatigue. Get up every time in between meetings and walk to the kitchen to get a drink.

  • Don't eat lunch at your desk whilst working. Take a break from your screen and stroke your pet, talk to your family, sit in quiet or read a book.

  • Do some gentle stretches to stretch out your back from sitting in one position.
